A Comprehensive Cleaning Program Is the Key to a Healthy School

When operating a school, education and the safety of the children in your care are your primary responsibilities. With education funding being what it is, educational facilities are being forced to do more with less. This is why it's so important that each facility establish a comprehensive cleaning program for managing facility cleanliness to ensure the health and safety of all occupants.

Indoor air pollutants, allergens and unsanitary conditions can be problematic for any facility to get a handle on but for educational facilities, the stakes are much higher. That is why educational facilities should have an infection control plan that practices all 3 stages of cleaning on a regular basis: Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sanitizing. Here’s the difference?

  • Cleaning – removes germs, dirt, and impurities from low-risk surfaces or objects, such as floors, windows, etc., where the likelihood of pathogen transfer from the surface is low.

  • Disinfecting – kills germs on frequently touched surfaces and surfaces likely to harbor pathogens. Disinfection usually requires the product to remain on the surface for a certain period of time.

  • Sanitizing – lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level.

We all know environments are healthier when they are kept clean and well maintained. That’s why a Comprehensive Cleaning Program should be put in place to reassure students, parents and staff that their educational facility is taking all of the steps necessary to control the spread of infectious diseases and maintain a healthy school environment.

Janitorial service providers should consistently provide training to their staff that highlights and refreshes any updated information in the industry. For example, years ago bleach was the #1 chemical used to clean, disinfect, and sanitize surfaces. When information began to surface regarding its corrosiveness, and harmful environmental effects it was then banned in many educational facilities. Our staff participates in continuous GHS training, Cleaning for Health, and Proper Disinfecting Practices and Procedures. Our goal is to ensure a healthy environment while providing a safe and trustworthy service.
